Math & Culture

by Bet Key Wong

Math is more than just numbers. From shopping to scheduling, we integrate math with our activities everyday.  In fact, mixing math and culture is a fun way to teach children about geography, language and arithmetic.

April is National Math Education Month. Here are some on-line activities to integrate math and culture that you might want to try at home and in the classroom:

1. Weather around the world:

From Epals.com, you can get an interactive map to get weather conditions and a 5-day forecast of more than 78,000 cities around the world. Select several countries from different regions of the world. Make a chart of the daily temperature for each country. Graph the data. Don't stop there, take some time to learn more about each country. What else can you find out about each country?

2. Recipes around the world:

Eat what you learn! Cooking is always a fun way to learn how to measure. Why not try some recipes from other parts of the world.  Courtesy of Whirlpool, some recipes from  Kids ' Multicultural Cookbook by Deanna Cook are available on line.

3. Holidays around the world:

From Scholastic.com's Math Hunt, you'll learn some interesting information about different holidays and test your math skills at the same time.  Have fun.

4. Currencies around the world

Pretend that you are traveling to other parts of the world. How valuable is your American dollar in other countries? Use Bloomberg's currency converter to find out.
