February is Black History Month.  But you don't have to wait until February to learn about the history and contributions of African Americans. The Internet provides a wealth of information about African American history all year round.

To start, you may want to give yourself a test.  The Atlanta Tribune provides a new set of questions each month to test your knowledge of African American history.

How did you do on  the quiz?  You may find the answers at Africana.com, a  comprehensive web site founded by Prof. Henry Louis Gates of Harvard University. Africana.com focuses on the history and culture of Africa and her diaspora. It is updated frequently and  it offers news, articles and background information on many well-known African Americans.

About.com is another great resource.  The African American section provides updated articles and resources on black history.  The American History section integrates African American history with other U.S. historical events. The Race Relations section offers insights into complex issues related to race and racism.

The Internet  is also a wonderful resource for lesson plans on African American history. Whether you are studying at home or teaching in a classroom, you will find many Web sites that offer ready-to-use educational materials . Here are some of our favorites:

In addition to background information on Black History Month, you will find on-line activities and a teacher's guide. The writing is clear and easy to read and  the pictures are attractive. Students are encouraged to submit their own ideas for others to read. The teacher's guide includes learning objectives and lesson planning suggestions.

For those who have high-speed access, you will enjoy this presentation on African American history. Britannica combines video, audio, pictures and text in their comprehensive guide to African American history. Teaching activities and a study guide are also provided.

Looking for new ideas to celebrate Black History Month? Education World has compiled many interesting projects from teachers who have found creative ways to celebrate African American heritage in the classroom.

Explore African American heritage though various documentaries by PBS. From the arts to sports, PBS offers a wide selection of articles and background information on African Americans and their contributions to the world.

Although this site is not updated frequently, PacBell Knowledge Network offers resources and educational activities for teachers and students.
